Is there a more anticipated holiday than the Fourth of July? Thanksgiving is a close second, but few things beat the sheer enjoyment of this special summer celebration. It could be the historical significance of the date itself, the fact that it’s summer or the happy childhood memories that this most evocative of dates brings right back to life.
However you plan to spend today, we hope our guide to celebrating in style gives you a few new ideas that become family traditions (and we promise we won’t tell anyone if you want to claim them as your own!).
Where better to celebrate than in the comfort of your own home? Setting your backyard as the focal point for your family celebrations makes sense on a few different levels, especially if you have one of our outdoor bar TV lift cabinets at home.
#1: No reservations needed! Getting a decent reservation for the Fourth commands an impressive level of planning. If you want to eat out, you might want to go ahead and make next year’s reservation right now! If you want to eat at a decent time, have food you enjoy, and be able to share it with as many people as you choose to invite, your backyard is the place to be.
#2: You control the menu. This is a day for celebration. So why not cook (and eat!) your food, your way? Celebrating at home is the best way to keep control of the menu – and we think it’s way more fun. Not only do you get to choose what you want to eat, you can control how it’s cooked and when it’s served. Plus, everyone can pitch in and bring their own favourite apps, sides, and salads.
#3: No clock watching. Wrangling everyone into the car and getting to the park, the beach or the restaurant at a designated time is more headache than this holiday needs. If you don’t want to feel harassed and hurried half the day getting kids, pets, parents and partners on the same page, an at-home event is the answer. Invite friends, neighbors and family members to drop by through the day so no-one feels pressured and everyone can relax.
#4: You get to decorate. It’s a long time ‘til Thanksgiving but the Fourth of July gives you a chance to decorate for the holidays. This is a fun tradition that everyone can enjoy and get involved with. Whether you want to keep it simple with red, white, and blue balloons or want to go all out with a firework display, decorating your home is just good fun.
Even if you’ve invited the entire neighborhood over to your house, today should be a fun, stress-free celebration. Keep things casual so everyone can relax and enjoy their day. There’s a time and a place for planning but, that’s 1. A formal celebration and 2. Not today.
Encourage people to wander in and out as it suits them. Jump in and out of the pool. Fire up the grill and chat with friends old and new. No dress codes, no timeframes, and no stress.
Hot tip: If you want to keep your own stress to a minimum, say ‘yes’ when people offer to bring something! Whether it’s a batch prepped cocktail, a potato salad, or bread rolls, allowing everyone to pitch in keeps things casual, lighthearted, and community-driven.
Music, movies, family games – the sky is the limit when it comes to the entertainment program. Having a few different play lists ready to go is a real time saver. Likewise, have your outdoor weatherproof TV lift cabinet up and running when guests arrive so everyone can immediately get settled in. Choose the ‘Kids’ profile on your streaming service and fire up some cartons of child-friendly shows to keep the youngest ones entertained for an hour or two.
We know that many states are already hot, hot, hot. To avoid having to keep running inside to refresh drinks, try mixing up large pitchers rather than individual serves. This is a real time-saver and means you can batch prepare ingredients such as simple syrups and fruit garnishes, so you aren’t messing around with prep work while everyone else has fun.
Another smart time-saver is to have the same base for your cocktails and mocktails. It’s easy then to keep one alcohol-free for the kids and anyone not drinking, while also creating a refreshing cocktail for those who are. Just be sure to clearly label each batch.
Sweating off your SPF at the grill as you sizzle up the steaks, burgers, corn, and hot dogs is easily done. Likewise, if you (or the kids) are in and out of the pool all day. Make sure you have plenty of SPF on hand and be vigilant about reapplying to stay protected from sun burn and heat stroke.
Don’t forget your pets need protection, too. If they’re going to be outside and the sun is strong, apply sunscreen to their most vulnerable spots such as the nose, ears and belly to keep their delicate skin safe.
